Becoming a Gardener and Finding Your Zen

Research has proved numerous times that working out your green thumb is beneficial for your health. Gardeners live longer and are much healthier both in body and mind than those who don't garden. Get out your pruning shears and spade and enjoy this super-beneficial pastime.

Gardening is good!

It helps keep you fit and healthy.

  • Dirt. The absence of exposure to microorganisms, minerals, and minerals (good and harmful) living in dirt, particularly during childhood, has been associated to a higher chance of developing autoimmune diseases such as asthma, allergies, and eczema.
  • Vegetables. Gardeners usually grow fruits and vegetables, and as a result of their efforts, they take them in.
  • Vitamin D. Provided by Mother Nature and naturally produced by your body through sunlight exposure, Vitamin D provides protection from heart disease, osteoporosis and cancer.

It helps burn calories. Raking, digging, and hauling vegetables and plants takes effort, not the dull 45-minute treadmill. Based on the CDC, it is possible to lose up to 330 calories within an hour of simple gardening and yard work, in comparison to lifting weights at the same time. Furthermore, digging, planting, and weeding require strength and flexibility to help you stay fit and reduce the risk of developing osteoporosis. According to the National Institute for Health, it is recommended that you plant a garden at least three times per week, for 30 to 45 minutes per day, for optimal health.

It shields your noodles. There is some evidence to suggest that gardening may be linked to the risk of developing dementia. Two studies that followed 60-70-year-olds up to 16 years found that those who regularly gardened had a 36% to 47% likelihood of developing dementia than those who didn't, even when other health-related factors were considered.

It reduces stress. Stress can negatively affect hormones and can increase the chance of contracting diseases. The balance of hormones by gardening could positively impact all aspects of blood pressure, cortisol levels, and inflammation. Do you think that activities that are less taxing, such as reading, have greater stress relief? Au contraire. A Netherlands study found that people who took a walk for 30 minutes had higher levels of happiness and better moods. They have lower levels of cortisol, a stress hormone, as compared to those who read indoors at the same time.

It will keep the user in touch. But it's not through Wi-Fi. Gardening has long-lasting positive effects on your mood that enhance empathy and compassion, which helps to build better relationships. Apart from reconnecting with your loved ones, it keeps you in touch with the natural world, creating feelings of wonder, gratitude and abundance, giving your existence an entirely new meaning. It also grants access to the backstage into "the zone" that altered state of consciousness that is experienced by those who practice yoga and meditation.
